Justice Johnson is a contemporary artist from south east Michigan. While he is self taught, he came into the fine art space over the pandemic after being reached out to by an NYC art gallery. Many of his paintings incorporate mental health themes as he navigates his struggle with bipolar disorder and anxiety. His work is influenced by graffiti and the bold art styles seen in pop culture from his childhood. Johnson has made a name for himself with his mural in Oakland University, his pop-up art works in Ann Arbor, and his commissioned works throughout the country.

The piece is called “Find Me”
Narrative: This piece comes after a months long creative block. The artist felt the need to get something on canvas and as the first bit of paint reached the canvas, the emotions started flowing. The mixed medium is layers on layers of letting it all out and flowing with the piece. In the background of the image you can see the words “Find Me” this is finding your inspiration, finding what drives you and working towards it. The face overtop of the text can represent the frustration of losing the will to create or to move forward. A lot of artists say they have a muse whether it is their significant other or a special place they paint. The woman in the bottom right represents this muse. While the artist doesn’t have one specific thing that is his muse, it represents the need to find something to drive him.

As an artist with Bipolar Disorder and an Anxiety disorder many of my paintings try to take raw emotion and put them into a form others can understand. This concept for piece was created in the midst of a severe panic attack. I was on a flight and halfway through the anxiety came out of nowhere. All I had was a mini sketch pad and a pencil so just started to draw. Many people can’t explain how they feel during a panic attack, it can take form in so many different ways. This is why all of the faces have a different expression to them. It was the culmination of all the different emotions swirling inside. The moment I got home from my trip I took to the canvas. I chose calming color’s because many people can hide anxiety from others but underneath is where all of the stress truly is.
