1892 Us Bayonet For Krag

1898 Military issue 30-40 with bayonet

I just recieved my great grandfathers military issue 1898 30-40 Krag with bayonets that he used in the Spanish/American war. There are also two ammo belts with an extra bayonet stamped 1903 and a long knife of unknown origin." I presume it was liberated from one of the island that were in dispute at the time".And a dozen bullets that look very old as well. I also have a family picture of my grandfather in military dress and his war vetrans hat. Everything seems to be in great working condition, Is this considered the M 1898 Constabulary Carbine that was issued to the infantry?? Should i have the gun professionally cleaned or will take away from the value? What would this be worth as a set? Agreed with above. You definitely have a full size U.S. 1892-series .30-40 Krag service Rifle as used in the Spanish-American War of 1898 and the Philippine Insurrections that followed. The Mills belt is the later cotton canvas type of that period. The rifle was in general line service until 1914, at least with the Marines and the Navy until enough U.S. Model 1903 service rifles could meet demand. For what it is worth, I have a picture of my maternal grandfather in the campaign uniform of 1917 armed with a "temporary issue" .30-40 Krag prior to his boarding a ship to France. Upon arrival, he was issued a Model 1903 Springfield. i guarantee you it has more value as an heirloom than it does monetarily. its is worth a few bucks as mooseman has pointed out. cleaning is a dangerous word when discussing antique/collectable firearms. best thing to do is keep the metal very lightly oiled to prevent rusting. many collectors consider the patina/natural aging to be part of its history and value, and cleaning will alter that.
