The Republicans Have A Different Plan
The Republican leader in the state House of Delegates say they will offer their own plan for 100 single member districts as an amendment to the redistricting bill on the House floor this week.
"I think it's clear that single member districts do make the delegates closer to the people they represent," House Minority Leader Tim Armstead said on Tuesday's MetroNews Talkline.
"It makes them more accountable. It cuts down on costs of election and it is just clearly more in line with the Constitutional requirement of one person, one vote."
As part of the House redistricting plan made public at the State House on Monday afternoon, there are 47 single member districts, including eleven new ones.
Some of the larger districts, though, including the seven member 30th Delegate District in Kanawha County, remain intact. A district in Monongalia County goes from four to five members.
Delegate Armstead says more time is needed for review.
"We feel very strongly that this plan that's going to govern the state for the next ten years of how people are represented in the Legislature and there should be opportunities for people to see these plans and comment on them," he said.
As proposed, Delegate Armstead's own district, the 32nd House district, will become a single member district. He says that is how it should be across West Virginia.
