Masako Masuda Young, 82
Masako Masuda Young
of Bremerton
Nov. 20, 1928
to Aug. 1, 2011
Masako Young passed away peacefully Monday, August 1, 2011, after a long battle with cancer, with her loving husband, children and grandchildren nearby in their Bremerton home.
Masako was born to Mr. and Mrs. Takutaro Masuda November 20, 1928 in Osaka, Japan. She lived a long, fulfilled life surviving fire bombings of WWII and relocating to the United States as a young, military bride. Masako married Howard (Sam) Young on September 29, 1958 at the American Consulate in Yokohama, Japan and was a dedicated Navy Wife for over twenty-two years. She was naturalized as an American citizen in San Diego, CA on September 27, 1963.
Masako was a strong, determined woman who, several months after they were married, made her twelve-day voyage to San Francisco on the Naval Troop Transport Ship, Sultan, without her Navy husband. She arrived to an unfamiliar culture, knowing very little English. She then flew to Seattle and was greeted by her husband's warm and loving extended family from Fall City, WA to whom she has been a treasure ever since. Her arrival in 1959 caused quite a stir in the small community. Five articles were written about her in the Snoqualmie Valley Record recounting her trip, clothing, and even the size of her small feet!
Sam and Masako made their first home in San Diego, CA where they welcomed their beloved son, Timothy, in 1967. During their military career, Sam & Masako lived in many places including the Philippines, Korea, Japan, California, Florida, and Maine. Near the end of their Navy career, they were stationed at Naval Base Kitsap - Bangor, and settled in Bremerton, WA where they have been area residents for 34 years.
Masako was the center of her family, always making sure everyone's needs were taken care of. She took great pleasure in almost daily visits with her beloved grandchildren from the time of their birth until the day of her death. She was also a talented knitter who created many cherished items for her family and won several awards over the years at the Kitsap County Fair. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Masako was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Kazuyo and Ritsuko, all of Osaka, Japan. She is survived by her sister, Mitsuyo Hirota of Osaka, Japan; husband, Howard (Sam); one son, Timothy and his wife Molly; two granddaughters, Mackenzie (Klinker) and Rebecca; and one grandson, Harrison, all of Bremerton, WA. As well as numerous brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nieces, and nephews for whom she cared deeply both in Japan and the United States.

South Korea has bid several times in an effort to host the Winter Olympics, and it was a case of third time lucky when it finally succeeded this year! In July 2011 the city of Pyeongchang was selected to host the 2018 Winter Olympics, beating Munich and Annecy in the final round of voting. During the lead-up to the selection process, Korean Air unveiled a Boeing 777-200 aircraft that flew regularly on a variety of international routes to fly the flag so to speak. It seems Korean Air showed remarkable foresight in being able to predict the outcome!
Dragons Wings series has produced a fine representation of this unique Korean Air aircraft. The die-cast model is precisely dimensioned. The colorful livery is the most notable thing about the model, and detail such as the skier and snowy mountain landscape is accurately depicted. This Wings aircraft model release is excellent timing, coming as it does hot on the heels of Pyeongchangs successful awarding of the games. Now collectors can also celebrate with South Korea in anticipation of this important international sporting event.
