Boulder Police Warn For Auto Repair Scammer

BOULDER, Colo. -- Boulder police are warning people about a man who is posing as an on-the-spot auto body repairman.

According to investigators, two women were approached separately by a man who calls himself “Clent.”

The first victim said that the man offered to do some body work to her van at her home in North Boulder on July 16. The woman agreed to pay the man $220 in cash.

The man “repaired” the van and applied wax to the vehicle as the woman continued to do yard work, according to Boulder police spokesman Kim Kobel.

The woman was told not to remove the wax until the following day. When she removed the wax, she discovered that the damage to the van was worse and that the cost to repair the new damage to the van was estimated at $350.

In another similar case in June, a man approached a woman at a Whole Foods parking lot convincing her that he would be able to repair a dent to her sport utility vehicle.

The woman agreed to pay the man $350 plus $60 extra to clean and detail the vehicle. The man put wax on the dent and used what appeared to be vegetable oil to wipe down the exterior and interior of the car to make it look shiny, Kobel said.

After the woman removed the wax, she found the car had 60 new dents around the original dent. The estimated cost to repair the damage is $1,250.

Boulder police describe the man as Hispanic, about 5 feet 7 inches tall, with short, dark hair and a mustache. He has a stocky build and was wearing a white T-shirt and khaki pants.

He may be driving a small, teal truck with a sign that reads, “All Tech Auto Body, 720-422-6332,” with Colorado license plate 166-RTV.

Police believe there may be more cases of this auto-repair fraud, and are asking anyone who may have been a victim to contact Detective Bob Wands at 303-441-3323.
