The move fills the last gap left when former Mt. Pleasant High School and tech center Principal Mike Pung was named superintendent. He had been the tech center principal for many years, and filled both roles during the 2010-11 school year.

A funeral service for Vera Shafer will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, August 4 at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street\, Mount Pleasant. The Reverend Charles Comfort, retired pastor, First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant, will officiate. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant. Friends may call from 12 Noon to 9:00 PM on Wednesday at the funeral home. The family will be present to receive friends from 6-7:30 PM Wednesday evening. Vera Charlotte Shafer was born September 19, 1919 in Mt. Pleasant. She was the daughter of Thomas P. and Daisy N. (Wright) Shafer. She graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1940. She worked at the former Cookes Funeral Home and cared for Mrs. Cookes. Vera worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown until April 6, 1944 when she began her taxi cab company, City Cab in Mt. Pleasant. In many untold ways, Vera went above and beyond the expectations of cab service. She delivered groceries and packages to those who could not get to the store. She gave many a young driver his or her first job, and taught them the values of respect, honesty and hard work. Vera ended her taxi cab operation on April 6, 1987, 43 years to the day that she began. After she closed the cab company, Vera continued to shop and delivery groceries and volunteer to get people to doctor appointments and other necessary appointments. She also made it a point to check in on people, some on a daily basis, to make sure that there was nothing they needed. Vera was recognized for her community service. She was the Grand Marshall of one of Mt. Pleasant’s Homecoming parades. In 1977, Vera was named Citizen of the Year by the Mt. Pleasant Chamber of Commerce. She received community volunteer service awards from both Governors Branstad and Vilsack. She was raised in the Baptist faith. Vera’s primary hobby was indeed helping people both young and old. In the 1950’s and 60’s, Vera raised Shetland Ponies. Vera did, on occasion, enjoy a glass of warm beer. Those thankful for sharing in Vera’s life include a nephew, Clifford Shafer of Rome, IA; 5 nieces, Delores Booton and Evelyn Beavers, both of Mt. Pleasant; Patty Morrow of Fontana, CA, Pam Randolph of Crown Point, Indiana and Wendy Shafer of New Castle, Australia; numerous nieces and nephews which extended to the generations of great, great-great and great-great-great nieces and nephews, as well as the whole community of Mt. Pleasant. Those considering an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Mt. Pleasant Fire Department.
