iMac: Apple tauscht defekte Festplatten aus

Betroffen sind iMacs mit 21,5-Zoll- und 27-Zoll-Display und einer 1-TeraByte-Festplatte von Seagate. Offenbar kann es bei einer «sehr kleinen Zahl» der verbauten Festplatten zu Ausfällen kommen, weshalb Apple eine Umtauschaktion gestartet hat. Nicht betroffen sind hingegen iMacs mit SSDs oder 2-TB-Festplatten. Betroffene Kunden, die ihren iMac zwischen Mai und Juli dieses Jahres gekauft haben, werden von Apple direkt kontaktiert, falls sie sich mit ihrer Mailadresse registriert haben. Ansonsten lässt sich über die Apple-Homepage auch anhand der iMac-Seriennummer feststellen, ob das eigene Modell von den defekten Seagate-Festplatten betroffen ist. Die Seriennummer kann im Fenster «Über diesen Mac» ausfindig gemacht werden, indem man doppelt auf die Versionsnummer klickt. Ausserdem ist sie auch auf der Rückseite des iMac-Standfusses eingraviert. Der Umtausch einer allfällig defekten Festplatte wird über einen Apple Store oder einen autorisierten Apple-Dienstleister abgewickelt. Vor dem Austausch sollten natürlich die vorhandenen Daten auf der Festplatte gesichert werden.

Seagate Adds Android Support for Wireless GoFlex Storage | Soft ...

Seagate said Monday that it has added Android support to its GoFlex Satellite disk drive, adding local “cloud” storage for the Google mobile operating system.

Specifically, a version of the GoFlex Media app has now been authored for Android. The drive was previously compatible with Android tablets and phones by using the device’s browser, but not through a dedicated application.

The free app can connect the Android devices to the GoFlex Satellite, a $199, 500-Gbyte drive that Seagate originally launched in May . That, in fact, is the average drive capacity for Seagate drives , the company said during its most recent earnings call.

Previously, only Apple’s iOS-based devices could connect with the Satellite, Seagate said. The drives itself can connect up to 3 devices simultaneously using 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi.

Like the iOS version, the app maximizes battery life through progressive download. It temporarily downloads media onto the Android device, letting the drive return to standby mode while the user enjoys their video. The drive itself contains a lithium-polymer battery with enough power to deliver 5 hours of video.

Though designed primarily for wireless use, the Seagate GoFlex Satellite also includes charging cables for both the home and the car, as well as a speedy USB 3.0 cable for connecting directly to a USB-equipped computer.
