Breeder dogs learn to be pets at National Mill Dog Rescue

"The minute their feet touch the ground, we can tell what kind of life they've had," says Theresa Strader. She arrived here with the dogs — fawn-colored and greys — just before dawn, having traveled 735 miles from the overcrowded southwest Missouri shelter that had temporarily housed the dogs after state officials seized them from a commercial breeding operation.

Most of the dogs, 3 to 7 years old, have churned out litter after litter while receiving minimal food, care and people contact. Most have horrid teeth and gums, and some have mammary tumors — problems that are common in puppy mill dogs, Strader notes. A couple have patches of dried feces in their ears even though Strader spent much of the trip picking off as much as possible. One scrawny female gave birth to four puppies soon after she was out of the vehicle.

Nevertheless, Strader says, "we know these dogs had a somewhat better life than most mill dogs, at least for a time, because most can tolerate touch."

Five years ago, wife/mother/nurse Strader had no such knowledge. But a random e-mail prompted her to travel to a Missouri dog auction where she got a worn-out mill dog she loved deeply for 15 months until Lily died of mouth cancer. Strader vowed she would learn and she would act.

The result: National Mill Dog Rescue, where on any given day 150 to 200 dogs — pugs, papillons, Shih Tzus , Yorkies, American Eskimo dogs, cocker spaniels, every popular pet store breed — are in rehab. Most have landed here after breeders targeted them to be shot, drowned or, in rare cases, Strader says, euthanized by a vet to make room for more productive breeders. Once they're healthy, they're loved into house-pet readiness.

In four years, the non-profit has grown from Strader's basement, where she housed the first 13 dogs rescued from a Missouri breeder, to the current 11,000-square-foot facility. The center's two surgery rooms were built by an army of volunteers; much equipment was donated by individuals and groups. In a den-like area, dogs grow accustomed to things they've never experienced.

The rescue group has saved and adopted out nearly 5,000 former mill dogs and, even though it's far from a population center, it has attracted more than 800 volunteers (only the veterinarians, a vet tech and the person who responds to all requests and communications are paid).

Boo Bear is a young adult (exact age unknown) American Eskimo dog. He was transferred to our rescue group from another rescue that needed help. Boo Bear was from a Georgia pound. He is a sweetheart, and will fit in well in any family. Boo Bear has a silly little grin as he has an underbite (it doesn't bother him, just makes his grin a little funny looking.) He always looks like he is smiling! Boo Bear would be best in a home with a fenced yard or daily access to a dog park where he can run and play.
