Sydney lures a cut-price Tiger Woods into the Australian Open

And, fear not, NSW taxpayers won't have to fork out anywhere near the $1.5 million our Victorian neighbours did when Woods played there in 2009 and 2010.

"We have caught the Shark and snared the Tiger," NSW Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner boasted yesterday.

"We're not paying what the Victorians paid, but what you'll see is a big shot in the arm for the NSW economy at a time when we desperately need it."

Officials would not speculate on how much Woods will be paid to attend although he still commands an appearance fee well into seven figures.

But a soaring Australian dollar, the Presidents Cup a week later in Melbourne and the golfer's well-documented private life troubles have combined to ensure Sydney fans will see him for the first time since 1996.

"The return to taxpayers is going to be massive - something like an additional $10 million economic boost to our state," Mr Stoner said.

When pressed on how he arrived at that figure and how Melbourne came up with a $30 million-plus benefit from Woods' '09 visit, Mr Stoner deadpanned: "Well, 42.7 per cent of statistics are made up on the spot."

Regardless, the superstar golfer's presence in the second week of November is a massive coup for the government.

"I'm very excited to be competing in the Australian Open," Woods said in a statement.

"I have a great affinity for playing golf in Australia and I'm looking forward to competing against an outstanding field at The Lakes in Sydney."

Since his 1996 visit to the Harbour City, Woods has accumulated more than $1 billion in earnings from golf, 14 major titles, even more mistresses and one scandal that redefined the term car crash.

He has struggled since the 2009 expose of his extra-marital affairs, sparked by a photo taken during a trip to Melbourne.

Last year, his wife earned nearly double what he did courtesy of their high-profile divorce and her $100 million payout.

Woods is winless since the 2009 JBWere Masters, hasn't played since May this year and has struggled with a knee injury.
