Hunting for bombs

FORWARD OPERATING BASE PASAB, Afghanistan — It’s 5:30 a.m. and it’s time to search.

For 2nd Platoon it’s another day hunting for bombs planted by the Taliban. The Wisconsin soldiers hope to find them before they explode and maim or kill.

As the men of Wausau-based 428th Engineer Co. gather around the commander of this Saturday’s road clearance mission, Sgt. Joshua Nachtrab of Omro, they learn which route they will travel and what to expect.

“Numerous, numerous small arms encounters on Montreal,” Nachtrab says of a road named by the Canadian military. “That will probably be our hottest route today.”

It’s not an easy job, since in some respects it’s like digging in a Crackerjack box — but for a lethal surprise. But the Army Reserves soldiers use the latest in technology to give them an edge. The technology ranges from small unmanned aerial vehicles the soldiers fly ahead of them to beam back images, to cameras that sense soil temperature and can locate a hot spot that reveals a buried IED.

Also at the Wisconsin combat engineers’ disposal is spectral analysis information from U.S. military planes that can sense the odor of explosives.

Capt. Andy Reichert was working in the unit’s tactical operations center one night when he got a call that a spectral analysis device had located IED production facilities nearby. An airstrike was called in and the bomb making factories were destroyed. “Isn’t that incredible? How many lives did that save?” said Reichert, a former Wisconsinite who worked at the Oscar Mayer plant in Madison for six years. “It sounds like science fiction.”

On this day the soldiers roll out of FOB Pasab, located about 60 kilometers northwest of the city of Kandahar, in six vehicles led by an armored tractor called a Husky toting a large, heavy steel plate in front. The big plate is ground-penetrating radar, in effect making the Husky a one-man, heavily-armored metal detector.

Inside the Husky cab, the driver looks at a computer showing pictures of what’s under the surface.

“It’s kind of an art determining what’s a rock and what’s an IED,” said the commander of the 428th, Capt. Jim Servi, who lives in the north central Wisconsin community of Hamburg.

Also in the convoy are two trucks pushing rollers that can detonate roadside bombs and several gun trucks outfitted with gadgets such as a large arm that can swing out from the side to root around in the dirt and dig up IEDs and a gyro-cam that rises up from the back of the truck to stream color video as well as thermal images.

I have an idea of making a plating armor for my ninja costume. I need the sheet made up rubber… kinda like the one i use to wipe my car that is reusable (wipe, squish out the water, and use again).
