Michigan's Desmond Howard Leads 3 Big 10 Players into College Hall of Fame
Here’s an excerpt from Howard’s HOF speechand another video interview we did with him
“Barry Alvarez took a program that had won six games in the three seasons prior to his arrival and turned them into a perennial powerhouse for more than a decade. There was never a doubt that he was headed to the Hall of Fame,” said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. “He’s the ultimate competitor, recruiter and tactician, and he has been a great mentor to a slew of current head coaches.”
Alvarez has elevated his self to a living legend in the state of Wisconsin after leading the Badgers to a 118-73-4 record and three Big Ten Championships in his tenure as the head coach. He’s the only coach in Big Ten History to ever win back-to-back Rose Bowls and sports the highest all-time bowl winning percentage (.727) for coaches with at least 11 bowl appearances.
He coached 12 First Team All-America players, including three-time First Team selection and 1999 Heisman Trophy winner Ron Dayne, 62 First Team All-Big Ten picks, and two NFF National Scholar-Athletes (Jim Leonhard and Joe Thomas).
In 1993, Alvarez was named Bobby Dodd National Coach of the Year, AFCA National Coach of the Year and College & Pro Football Newsweekly National Coach of the Year. The 1999 Victor Award (National Coach of the Year) winner, Alvarez was a finalist for ESPN National College Coach of the Decade.
Herrmann might have been the originator of “basketball on grass” at Purdue and one of the best examples for why Purdue is known as the cradle of quarterbacks. He set NCAA records for career attempts, completions, yards and total offense.
Including the 2011 FBS class, only 896 players and 192 coaches have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame from the nearly five million who have played or coached the game over the past 142 years. In other words, less than one percent (.0002) have been deemed worthy of this distinction.
Be sure to return to this site in the upcoming days/weeks as we’ll have features/exclusives on all three of these guys plus Gene Stallings!

1993 Super Bowl Mvp - News

The Raiders actually made it to Super Bowl XXXVII that season, boasting a conference-best 11-5 record and the league MVP (QB Rich Gannon). But in a cruel twist of fate, their opponents would bethe Tampa Bay Buccaneers. And the rest, as they say,

He won the Bert Bell Award and Pro Football Writers Association NFL MVP in 1993 after winning the MVP award in Super Bowl XXVIII, the second straight year Dallas won the title. His finest season came in 1995, a year he set career high marks of 377

Stabler helped Oakland achieve their first Superbowl win at the end of the 1976 season. He was the NFL MVP in 1974 and was selected to the Pro Bowl twice. Stabler was one of the last of the wild and crazy members of the infamous 1970s Raiders.
In Super Bowl XX at the end of the 1985 season, Dent became one of only four men to be named the Super Bowl's MVP while playing on defense. He had 1 ½ sacks in the game, helping the Da Bears to a 46-10 romp over the New England Patriots.

It's not as though they beat a second-year expansion team to get into the Super Bowl. Everything about last year's team was first class, right down to its quarterback winning the Super Bowl MVP. I'm not taking anything away from the 1996 Packers that
Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2011: Honoring Richard Dent ...
The Pro Football Hall of Fame is set to induct the Class of 2011 this August 6th at their enshrinement ceremony, where Marshall Faulk, Richard Dent, Shannon Sharpe, Les Richter, Deion anders, Chris Hanburger, and Ed Sabol are going to have their legacies cemented in NFL history in Canton, Ohio.
In honor of those great men, I’ve decided to start a series of articles reminiscing on the impact they had on the league in preparation for this coming weekend’s festivities.
So sit back and enjoy as we relive the memories of some of the most important men in football.

Richard Dent
The 1985 Chicago Bears went down as one of the best teams in NFL history, and defensive end Richard Dent was an integral key to their success.
Coming out of Tennessee State, the Bears used the 203rd overall pick in the 8th round of the 1983 Draft on Dent, and he quickly developed into a force to reckon with off the edge.
After a quiet rookie campaign, he registered a whopping 34.5 sacks from 1984-1985. Moreover, he was instrumental to their title run as he totaled six sacks and five forced fumbles, including two of each in their commanding 46-10 victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XX of which earned him the game’s MVP honors.
Even after the Bears fell off their dominant ways, Dent stayed with the team until 1993 and was selected as a five-time All Pro during that span. At that point, he had amassed 124.5 sacks.
Unfortunately, injuries caught up with him. He joined the 49ers in 1994, but was sidelined for the rest of the season after just two games. Interestingly enough, they still won a Super Bowl which marked the second ring of his career.
Dent would return to Chicago, but was never the same player as his earlier days. After a year there, he spent another year each with the Indianapolis Colts and Philadelphia Eagles. During those stints, he served as only a situational pass rusher but was rather effective despite being 37 years old.
At 6’5″ 265 lbs., Dent relied on his speed to beat opposing offensive lineman and get after the passer. It was that unique skill set that ranks him tied for 6th on the all-time list for most sacks with 137.5 the most sacks of all-time.
All in all, he’s earned his spot in Canton as one of the most feared defenders in NFL history.
