Lice! Lice! Lice! Horror. Itching. Awful.

Say the word lice and every parent feels an itch. A hand goes up to their head, and they scratch.

The lice themselves – effing little bloodsuckers – are manageable. It’s the rest of the world that makes the experience miserable. Work colleagues you’ve never touched wave their hands at you and say, “Stay away.” Play dates get cancelled, even for the kid without lice.

Known lice carriers are shunned. Beleaguered and exhausted parents spend evening after evening after work washing bedclothes, vacuuming couches, cleaning hair and generally worrying about missing just one bug.

We’re just coming out of a round of lice now. And it sucks. (HA! A lice pun. I’ll laugh as soon as my sense of humor comes back.)

We are, unfortunately, lice magnets . My kids have picked them up in pre-school too many times to count. And at school. In one instance, I banned my kids from the pillowy, carpeted reading nook in their classroom. But it didn’t work. We still got it twice that year. I quizzed Son about how that could have happened. Did he share a comb? Hats? Did he put on the cool period hats at Colonial Williamsburg? No. Nothing. Did he read in the reading nook? No. “But we wrestle in there. It’s fun,” said Son. Mystery solved.

It’s nice to have soft pillows in the reading areas of schools but some smart soul should put them in the dryer for 30 minutes every weekend. The lice rate would plummet.

My kids have picked them up in a movie theater. Think of kid movies. Every two hours a new head rests on the back of a movie seat, just below the top, and doesn’t move for 90 minutes. Hard to think of a more efficient lice delivery system. My kids will be seeing “Zookeeper” this week in hoodies, never mind the 100 degree temperatures.

In one of our first bouts, Daughter brought them home from India, giving them to me as I cuddled her during the 24-hour plane ride home. She also had a belly full of parasites and an open sore from ringworm on her head. I – jet legged into an IQ of about 45 – put pesticide lice shampoo on her head. In fact, I put it on the open ringworm sore where it could be most efficiently absorbed into her brain. I asked the pediatrician to reassure me that I had done no harm, and there was a long, horrible silence.

I swore I would never use pesticides on my children again. That decision was affirmed when I had an off-chance chat with a hot-shot board-certified pediatrician during a break in congressional testimony she was giving about lead paint on toys.
