Welcome again everybody to another fun-filled edition of 411 Music Ten Deep! Since it's the middle of summer here in the good ol' US of A, I figure'd it would be a good time to look at the best songs that are in someway related to that big orange ball in the sky. But first, we'll look back to the feedback to the list of the Top Ten Canadian Artists: "Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)" was one of the songs that Jimi Hendrix was working on at the time of his death in 1970, and there's an incomplete quality to it that somehow matches the song's drugged-out vibe and feeling. The entire thing comes off as ethereal and open-ended, making the perfect stage for some of Hendrix's best guitar work, which is obviously saying something. The Walker Brothers weren't actually brothers, none of the band members have the last name "Walker" and they didn't even write what would become their biggest hit in the United States. "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" was originally released by Frankie Valli in 1965 and was a marginal hit, but found a whole new level of success the next year with the Walker Brothers' cover version that reached the top of the UK charts. The song features a wonderful orchestral arrangement that Scott Walker would later put to good use in his solo career; it also makes it sound exactly like the sun won't be coming out any time soon, with a kind of beautiful sadness and melancholy to it that is tough to balance, but something that the Walker Brothers managed to do excellently with this song. Donovan has always (unfairly or not) been cast in the shadow of Bob Dylan, a similar sounding folkie who was revolutionizing music at the same time Donovan was becoming popular. Other than the obvious fact that almost everyone else in the history of popular music has been relegated to Bob Dylan's shadow, that implication also negates the quality work that Donovan put out during this time, most notably what is probably his most famous work and definitely his best, "Sunshine Superman.
