Falklands General Purposes Committee Report 27 July 2011
GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEEREPORT OF THE 27 JULY 2011
Report on the General Purposes Committee held on the 27th July. All members were present with the exception of the Hons W Luxton, Jan Cheek and Dick Sawle who are all overseas at the moment.
The meeting started at 8am, taking the usual format, with Executive Council papers being one of the first items taken. These will form part of a separate report. The Governor attended at 11am and Acting Chief Executive, Keith Padgett at 13.30. The meeting with the Ag CE was a single item meeting: shipping. This will be something that you will be hearing more of over the next couple of weeks as we move down the road to hopefully firming up details with a preferred bidder.
Some of the items that were discussed that I can report on included Sea Trucks. A letter had been received from the RBA reporting on understandable worries that people have that the present sea trucks cannot carry vehicles etc. We have been promised a paper at the August Executive Council on this subject which hopefully will progress the issue.
Also we discussed another request from FITV to film at Legislative Assembly and public meetings. We have replied to their letter basically restating that the majority of members are not minded to allow cameras into Legislative Assembly sessions and will be consulting with the people at the next public meeting to see what their feelings are on allowing cameras into public meetings. We will be guided by the wishes of the public.
A suggestion was received from the Public Diplomacy Group that the 4th June 2012 be made a public holiday to celebrate the diamond jubilee of the queens coronation. The actual coronation took place on the 2nd of June which falls on a Saturday so the fourth will be a day in lieu. The 4th is also the day that has been chosen for the lighting of beacons across the UK and world to celebrate the jubilee, which we here in the Falklands will be participating in; there will be more about this in due course. It was agreed that this would be raised at the Executive Council meeting on Thursday.
Following on from the public meeting the Hon Emma Edwards reported that she had received communications that government tenants could have a garden and also keep a few chookies should they so wish but she was still pursuing the matter to see if this is actually stated in their tenancy agreement.

How to identify good topics for research papers?
The topic of a research paper is the research question addressed in the paper. Most students are not clear about what the specifications of a good topic are. Furthermore, they do not know how to differentiate a good topic from a suitable topic. Ignorance on these aspects often results in poorly chosen topics and unimpressive research papers. In order to be able to fairly judge the suitability of a research paper topic, you will first need to learn how to identify good topics for research papers .
Spotting good research paper topicsA research paper topic is one of the most important elements of a research paper and a wrong choice of topic can affect the whole research paper. Hence, every minute you spend on searching for a good topic for a research paper is worth it. There are various aspects which qualify a topic as good for research. First and foremost, it must be one with high scope in the research area of the subject. Topics which have existing solutions don’t excite the audience, unless your thesis is an extremely interesting one. It is safer to go for a research question which is yet to be solved.
Ascertaining the suitability of research topicsThere are numerous good topics for research papers . But not all of them would be suitable for all projects alike. The suitability of a topic, for a particular research paper project, depends on various factors. If you do not pay attention to those factors while choosing your research topic, your research paper would stand the risk of getting rejected. Let us take a look at what all makes a good topic suitable for a particular project.
• The guidelines: Each research project comes with a specific objective. The rules of a project would be set with regard to the objective of that project. Most project guidelines contain instructions regarding the choice of topic and if so, those would form a part of the criteria of evaluation. Hence, out of the good topics you have short listed for your paper, you must first identify those which fit into the guideline instructions regarding the topic.
• The proposed audience: Another factor to be considered while picking your topic is the intellectual level of your proposed audience. If you have not been asked to address any particular audience, then count your instructor as your audience. The topic you pick must be one which would be able to generate interest in your audience. Assessing the audience is an important part of writing a research paper. Having a clear idea of what your audiences expect from you is necessary not only while picking the topic but during the research paper writing stage as well.
