The Return of WHFS Radio

But despite its protracted decline and potential modern irrelevance for anyone with a Pandora or Spotify account, anyone with memories of the station's heyday -- or even the flashes of its former self that were occasionally evident throughout that long '90s slide from free-form greatness -- still has a special place in their heart for the station. For me, I discovered the station around 1990, right about the time that I also got my first record store job in high school. The two events dovetailed nicely, ensuring that most of my paychecks would end up being sunk back into records. After knowing little other than DC101 and WJFK's cock-rock and classic rock stylings, a station where I could hear the Fugazi or Gang of Four's bracing post-punk sidling up next to some melodic, new-wavy XTC pop, with a Sugarcubes chaser.

That was largely over by the middle of the decade, when every third song was likely to be Nirvana, Pearl Jam or Soundgarden (or worse, their radio-ready doppelgängers Bush, Stone Temple Pilots and Candlebox), but late night often had a little less structure, and longtime DJ Weasel's afternoon "My Three Songs" feature remained an outside-the-box feature for many of those years. As the City Paper's post pointed out, the revived station appears to be aspiring to its most boring days, featuring "your favorite alt-rock tracks by all your fav bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Smashing Pumpkins, Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, and a ton more." A quick listen this afternoon largely bore that out: Bush? Check. Cypress Hill? Check. RHCP? Big love rollercoaster check. But there are some things sneaking into the mix that probably never would have passed muster in HFS 10-15 years ago, either because it didn't exist or was more obscure than they'd become. Here's what I caught while listening online this afternoon:

Crystal -- "Method Busy Child" Can't say we didn't see it coming though...it's almost exactly 20 years since the release of Nirvana's Nevermind , so we're due for a little nostalgia.  I'm not stoked to relive the era either, but I'm of the mind that 90s music is a lot better than a) the 80s schlock now played on stations like WASH FM and b) any of us really remember.

It’s that time of the week when many of us get excited about the Fashionably Late Event that takes place in the CHIC sim.  This week they’ve got some red hot items, and this sexy little dress is one of the items featured!  This is from Riddle and comes in two colors, black and red which i’m wearing above and a white and green version.  I’ve paired it with the Carlotta Onyx jewelry set from Caroline’s Jewelry and my Maitreya Gold Foxy Black heels.

Maitreya Gold footwear has really grown on me lately.  It’s a little on the pricey side, but you are paying for worthwhile quality.  I own these heels, their flip flops, and just yesterday I bought a pair of bare feet from them.  All three designs are absolutely flawless.  I can’t find a single error anywhere.  Unfortunately in Second Life lately I’ve seen a LOT of footwear that is less than ideal on a quality standard.  You may be able to get a pair of scripted & sculpted heels for a “great deal”but often times when you cam up close they are going to be filled with errors.  Maitreya Gold is worth it’s weight in…well…gold!

Adorkable Poses also released a great collection of footwear poses to model the beautiful footwear.  I know i’ve said it in previous posts but I appreciate the time and effort Adorkable Peapod puts into her poses.  She almost always does mirrored poses in each set, and offers a variety of options for people to choose from.  As a photographer, I cannot begin to express the appreciation I have for a pose pack with options.

Last but not least, Elikatira has made another really beautiful updo.  This one is called Charmed and it is oh so charming.  It’s difficult to see the back of this hair in the photo but it comes up really high and has a messy appeal to it.  This is the perfect hair to wear with a variety of outfit choices, and lets me show off my earrings! Nicely done!

Oh…did I mention the title of this post totally made me think of those Red Hot candies?  Have you ever had those? The cinnamon flavored hard candies.  So delicious!  Now i’m craving some!
