Pair San Francisco fish stew with bruschetta

Seafood and San Francisco are a great combination. The Italian residents there paired the area's abundant fresh seafood with tomatoes and basil to make cioppino, a light dish perfect for summer dining.

Traditionally, several types of fish and shellfish are used. I've used mahi mahi and scallops, because they are readily available. Any type of fish can be used. You can create combinations.

Serve the cioppino with brushchetta, a bread prepared Italian-style. Traditionally, the bread is spread with garlic and olive oil and roasted over the coals. I simply toast the bread under the broiler or in a toaster and top it with fresh, flavorful tomato, onion and garlic mixture.

Cioppino

Wash the scallops and fish, and pat dry with a paper towel. Cut the fish into pieces about the same size as the scallops.

Heat the oil in a medium-size, nonstick skillet over medium-high heat.

Saute the seafood for 2 minutes, turn and cook for 1 more minute. To test, separate the flesh with the point of a knife. It should be opaque, not translucent. Cook for an additional minute, if needed.

Divide between two soup bowls, and cover to keep warm.

Using the same skillet, saute the onion, green bell pepper and garlic over medium-high heat for 2 minutes. Add the potatoes, tomatoes, clam juice and crushed red pepper. Bring to a simmer, cover with a lid and cook for 15 minutes.

Add the balsamic vinegar, and season with and salt and pepper. Spoon over the fish in the soup bowls. Sprinkle the basil on top.

Makes 2 servings.

Guest sues Hilton hotel over 75-cent newspaper charge | Hamara ...

Rodney Harmon 55, of Sacramento, claims in his lawsuit filed last week in San Francisco that "he did not request a newspaper and assumed it had been placed there by staff" at the Hilton Garden Inn at Sonoma County Airport.

He later realised 75 cents had been added to his bill – and has accused Hilton of hiding the charge.

"The newspaper charge is inconspicuously placed in the paper sleeve in which the guest’s room card is placed upon check-in," the Telegraph quoted his lawsuit as saying.

He has filed a class-action lawsuit for at least 5 million dollars against the company, on behalf of all guests who may also have unwittingly paid for a newspaper they did not want.

Harmon alleged that the fee was described in ‘extremely small font which is difficult to notice or read’, and "the word ‘newspaper’ does not appear anywhere" on his hotel invoice.
