ST. PETERSBURG - Family reunions can be exciting for families who do not get to see each other often. It is fun to catch up and celebrate all of the reasons why it is great to be related. A typical family reunion will assemble the survivors of grandparents and great-grandparents. The older attendees are generally grandparents, parents, siblings or first cousins while the youngest could be second, third or fourth cousins.
A family reunion can provide reenactments that highlight pivotal points in a family�s history, fascinating art that brings to life tales of ancestors and their accomplishments, along with stories of legends of the past.
One reason to go to a family reunion is to get to know the family you think you know already. Your grandpa is one way at Christmas and Thanksgiving, but he may be completely different when he�s joking around with the cousin he roomed with in college. They may have shared inside jokes you�d be shocked at, or you�ll see grandpa laugh like he�s never laughed before. There may also be old feuds or rivalries among family members that you�ve never known about. Seeing family members around other people for the first time helps you know your entire family a little bit better.
Sometimes meeting new people is hard. You�re not always sure that you�ll have something in common to strike up a conversation. At a family reunion, though, a distant cousin might become your new best friend. It�s easy to start talking because you automatically have something in common: family. Even if you don�t hit it off as best friends with a distant relative, knowing she is there may help you in the future with family burdens or problems.
Traditional family reunion activities include an afternoon luncheon or early evening dinner and a program featuring music, song, poetry reading, history recitals, honorary recognition of elders, community contributions and educational achievements.
