Moving beyond 'Employee Engagement'
Let’s start with the first assumption. Like any other physiological ailment, psychological ailments also have causes, symptoms and a prognosis, in the same breadth, treating a symptom does not alleviate the cause. By running a pan-organisation or department-wide fun event, we are again assuming that the cause of employee stress and lack of morale is of lack of fun, which I believe might be the case for some, and for all you know might not be the case for a large majority. Now let’s look at the second assumption. There are two dimensions of emotional connect or disconnect from an individual standpoint. Firstly, its the ‘Peer level’ connect and the second and the more relevant from an engagement standpoint is the ‘Organization level’ connect. Depending on the organisation’s culture and how the events are designed, if the interaction happens more at a peer-level, then again the employee might feel connected to his peer but not to the organisation at large, but then is that the outcome that we are looking at? Much of what we just discussed in terms of ‘fun events’ is all external drivers. In other words, these are aspects in the external environment which lead to emotional engagement. Research tells us that even if we focus on external drives of engagement, fun events are only one of the several drivers which could lead to engagement. There could be other external drivers like physical work environment, for instance, it is good to check if your employees sit in a cramped office space vis-a-vis a more spacious environment. High noise levels in the work environment have shown to have a negative impact on employee satisfaction and productivity. The tools that employees use also are a part of the external drivers, for instance, a very heavy or old laptop with worn out keys might have a significant negative impact on the user’s engagement and productivity, depending on a given context. Moving on to internal drivers of engagement, Studies among highly engaged employees have shown that the there are certain key internal drivers that seem to have relatively greater impact on the engagement levels of these individuals. For instance, the opportunity to use one’s strengths stands out, this again to be implemented would require a fairly well designed intervention to first understand the strengths of each employee and later find a fit of those strengths in his role.Fun Science Facts - News
