Chicken curries favor, atmosphere lackluster
El Rincon Tico doesn't exactly seduce you with its ambiance. The service lacks polish. There are few choices on the menu. It doesn't take credit cards. But get beyond that and the food is excellent with prices that are easy to digest.
Thony Clarke — of Mango Man and Cafe Costa Rica fame — opened El Rincon Tico in the middle of the Williamson Street construction zone June 25.
The new restaurant is on the first floor of an unassuming house across from the BP gas station. It has an attractive sign out front, but only a few sorry plants serve as decor. Loud, tropical music was coming from the kitchen the night we visited.
All of that matters little when you are sipping a wonderfully refreshing coconut smoothie ($3.95), which comes in a small plastic cup.
Another good starting point are the delicious empanadas ($2.95 for one filling, $3.95 for two), which come with beef, pork, chicken, cheese, spinach or beans. Both the spinach and cheese ones were terrific - lightly fried and as big as a taco.
The two sauces served with the empanadas were what really made it. My companion and I couldn't decide which we liked more: the green jalapeno salsa or the red, hotter, habanero one.
"They should bottle this stuff," said my companion. Then, after the meal, when I used the washroom in the other room, I noticed Clarke does bottle and sell the sauces. In fact, he intends to eventually run his salsa business in the space upstairs.
If Clarke's famous curry chicken is on special ($12.95), don't pass it up. A mound of shredded chicken came with delectable strips of soft, fried plantain topped with a sweet mango sauce and a generous scoop of rice and beans that was better seasoned than your average rice and beans.
My companion didn't think the chicken tasted like curry, probably because she is used to Thai and Indian curries and not Clarke's Central American take. We both agreed the moist chicken had a complex, extraordinary flavor. "This is the kind of chicken that you cook all day," my friend said.
The fish tacos ($3.95) weren't as good as other versions in town. The tilapia was lightly fried, but overwhelmed by double corn tortillas stuffed with lettuce and tomatoes. The homemade fish sauce and cilantro were nice touches, though.
The open-faced papusa ($5.95) didn't stand out either. It was similar to a Mexican tostada, but its platform was a thick, deep-fried corn meal tortilla that was as big as a dinner plate. It was piled high with beans, lettuce and tomato, and topped with cilantro and mango dressing. I ordered it with pork, and the pieces were large and tender. Like the taco, however, the meat was upstaged by the other ingredients.
