MBA programs fuel growth

Some area MBA programs

Xavier University Students : 958 students overall, including about 60 in a full-time on-campus program, about 30 in the on-campus Executive MBA program that meets two days a week, about 130 in off-campus programs in West Chester Township, Deerfield Township and Fort Mitchell, and more than 700 in the on-campus Professional MBA program that meets two evenings a week.
Tuition : Varies, but the Professional MBA program generally costs about $34,000 over two to three years.

Miami University Students : About 30 students in the traditional full-time program in Oxford and up to 40 students per year in the Professional MBA program in West Chester.
Tuition : About $28,000 for the two-year part-time program.

Thomas More College Students : About 107 MBA students in its TAP program. Students attend class one night a week and meet with other students once a week. A location in Blue Ash opened in mid-2009.
Tuition: About $26,000 for the two-year program.

University of Cincinnati Students : 170 students in its full-time MBA program.
New program : UC is phasing in a program called "Accend," where students in different undergraduate programs around UC will work together on projects for outside clients, earning both a bachelor's degree and an MBA.

The MBA degree, that ticket up the corporate ladder, is one of the hottest tickets in town.

Part-time programs, often called professional or executive MBAs, are fueling the growth.

Students keep their jobs and take classes once or twice a week and graduate in less than three years, often paying $25,000 or more over several years to get the degree.

Xavier University, leader in the Greater Cincinnati market with more than 950 students in four programs, opened an off-campus center in Northern Kentucky this summer with about 10 students already taking classes.

"It's been something I've been considering for quite some time but couldn't fit into my life," said Tiffany Murphy of Independence, who works in marketing at Procter & Gamble Co. and started at Xavier. "I feel like it's a differentiator. It will give me credibility, help me stand out."

Plenty of other programs are chasing Xavier: Miami University has a program at its West Chester Township campus; the for-profit University of Phoenix offers mostly online classes; tiny Thomas More College in Crestview Hills has its popular Thomas More Accelerated Program, or TAP.

. I knew that I wanted to study creative writing at a smaller school, while the Parental Budget Oversight Office determined that this next phase of my education would be realized from within the parameters of a public-school budget. If memory serves, my final school choice came down to which campus had  the greatest number of  “pretty trees” and bookish guys.

This is not to say that my undergrad alma mater is not a reputable institution…just that at 18 I was lucky enough to have sharper eyes than mine supporting my college search because I certainly did not understand the finer details of the decision I was making. Perched  atop that list of THINGS I DID NOT UNDERSTAND was the fact that colleges and universities essentially fall into one of three categories: unaccredited , regionally accredited , and nationally accredited institutions–and that each of these designations has benefits and disadvantages that the graduate will carry with them for a lifetime:

Unaccredited schools (also occasionally referred to as “diploma mills”) offer almost-immediate credentialing through a combination of “life experience” and limited coursework. Unfortunately, it is often difficult to procure tuition assistance for these programs and the resultant degrees are generally under-valued by prospective employers. Additionally, graduates of unaccredited schools may not be able to sit for licensing exams or obtain licenses to practice in their desired field. Nationally accredited schools are the Johnny-Come-Latelies to the post-secondary-accreditation scene. Though still accredited through peer-review, they are seen as less prestigious than regionally accredited schools (bigger does not in this case mean better) and are oftentimes the go-to accreditor of for-profit, vocational, career, and tech programs. Important to remember: nationally-accredited schools will almost always accept credits from regionally accredited schools–however the inverse is rarely true. Regionally accredited schools are the blue-bloods of the accreditation world.
