Eagle Scout helps renovate Salvation Army Thrift Shop in Carlilse
Two new Salvation Army officers assigned to CarlisleThe Salvation Army recently welcomed two new commanding officers to Carlisle.
Majors David Sr. and Karen Wetzel were assigned to Carlisle June 29. Prior to that, they had been posted in Bridgeport, Conn.
The husband and wife are 18-year veterans of the Army, but both have been involved with it since birth, David Wetzel said.
"My mom and dad were soldiers and Karen's mother was a soldier," he said.
In the Salvation Army, those with ministry training are called majors and those without are soldiers.
Founded in London in 1865, the Salvation Army's structure is modeled after real armies, with ranks, flags (also called colors) and uniforms.
It expanded to the United States in 1880.
David and Karen began their ministry training in 1993 at the School for Officer Training in Suffolk, N.J.
"We're excited to be here, to help the community in any way we can," Karen Wetzel said.
Most teenagers spend their summer vacations relaxing, spending time with friends, maybe working a part-time job.
Christopher Kaufman, then 16, spent part of his summer vacation re-painting and making over the Salvation Army Thrift Shop at 125 S. Hanover St.
The Carlisle Area School District senior planned the entire project, from conception to completion, as part of his Eagle Scout project.
Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in Boy Scouts, is achieved by less than 2 percent of boys enrolled in Boy Scouts, Chris said.
In addition to a project, significant community service and leadership hours are required. And you have to do it before you turn 18.
At a re-dedication ceremony Thursday, Chris was praised for his efforts, but he was quick to acknowledge that he did not do - and could not have done - the project by himself.
"I'm glad everything came together. I couldn't have done it myself. I had to have help," he said.
He chose the Salvation Army because, he said, "it's a good organization." A friend of his had also done an Eagle Scout project for them and he wanted to follow that lead.
Chris's project included raising money through donations, planning, organizing and executing the project, a process that took about seven months, said his father, Mitchel Kaufman.
Home Depot, Ross and Target were among the corporate sponsors that donated materials to help with the project, Kaufman said.
Between June 24 and 26, Chris and a team of helpers - most of them from his troop, Troop 173 - repainted the walls, created clothing areas using shelving and hanging closet-style areas, added bins and shelving for display and storage and installed a counter for jewelry and other small items.

Message Boards - "scrapping for Boy Scouts" - General Scrappin ...
I've seen a couple of posts on how folks were having to complete their sons' scrapbooks for Eagle. I have a First Class scout right now, but he plans to get make Eagle, so what is it I need to do as far as scrapping this? I am at a loss. I have collected photos, of course, but have yet to put a page together, and didn't know it was a requirement, if it is. If it isn't a requirement, I'd love to hear your suggestions for doing this, and what you plan to do with the books as far as Eagle is concerned.
Thanks. It's not a Boy Scout requirement for an Eagle Scout if that's what you're asking.
My son just got his Eagle a couple weeks ago and I am starting to work on his scrapbook to display at his ceremony. It's totally up to you if you want to scrapbook his scouting years or not.
They have Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Eagle Scout albums and recently came out with new styles. They are post bound by K & Co with papers to match.
I plan to do all 3 albums separately. The Eagle album will only have copies of his paperwork, pictures of his project and the award. I will likely add pics from the ceremony afterward. Yes, that is what I was asking. I was always planning on scrapping his Boy Scout stuff, I just didn't know if it was required to be done a certain way for presentation to the powers that be. But since it doesn't appear to be a requirement, then I will just do his book any old way I please (the caveat being, of course, that I am not permitted to use "glitter or flowers or swirls any other girly-looking stuff, Jeez, Mom!" .
Having it available to view at the Eagle Ceremony is a great idea - I will plan to do that. No, it's just to display at the reception after the Eagle Ceremony. Our troop displays their shirts from 1st grade til now, all his Cub and Boy projects...pinecars, etc, any memorabilia. Most make a slide show to play during the reception and have cake, food, etc. I'm doing a tshirt quilt also.
Either ask some other moms or go to any Eagle Ceremonies your troop has and pay attention, they are usually basically the same per troop, you just need to know what your troop does.
I'll end up having Cub, Boy, Eagle, Philmont, Northern Tier, and Sea Base books. When they go on a National trip the adults and kids pool all their photos and either load them up all in one place or make a CD copy for everyone on the trip.
