Representatives of several hotels and businesses said on Tuesday they'd welcome another taxi company into the Cranberry area.

The Yellow Cab Co. of Pittsburgh is seeking permission from the Public Utility Commission to operate within several communities in northern Allegheny and southern Butler counties. The much smaller Cranberry Taxi and Classy Cab already serve the area.

"I don't care if they're yellow, white or pink. I just want more cabs," said Andrew Eck, general manager of Hyatt Place Pittsburgh/Cranberry during a commission hearing before Administrative Law Judge Mary D. Long.

Robert C. DeLucia Sr., owner of Cranberry Taxi and Classy Cab, said that Yellow Cab's request is simply retribution because he has applied for permission to operate Cranberry Taxi throughout Allegheny County as Veterans' Taxi.

"It's the 800-pound gorilla," DeLucia said. "They're just going to flood the market."

Jerry Campolongo, director of Yellow Cab, said the company simply is responding to the market. The company, which operates throughout the region, has 338 taxis.

"I'm not looking to ruffle any feathers out there," Campolongo said. "At the end of the day, we're going to service who we have to service."

Under utility commission rules, Yellow Cab can make trips to and from Cranberry to its approved service area, including the Pittsburgh International Airport and Downtown. However, unless the commission approves, it can't take someone from one point in Cranberry to another in the township, or to several other nearby communities such as Seven Fields, Bradford Woods and Pine.

Several hotel operators complained that Cranberry Taxi, which operates eight taxis in the area, is slow in responding to calls. Classy Cab also uses several of its vehicles, extended hybrids, in the area when needed, DeLucia said.

Several witnesses said they didn't know Yellow Cab could pick up customers and take them Downtown or to the airport.

With dozens of hotels, restaurants and several large businesses in the area, including the 5,000 employees at Westinghouse, the need for taxi service is growing, according to witnesses at the hearing.

"There's a huge need for more transportation than currently exists because of the enormous growth in the area," said Ronald Antonucci, general manager at Pittsburgh Marriott North at Cranberry Woods.

Daniel Cooper, Westinghouse's corporate travel manager, said the company would like to reduce its need for rental cars.
