Chained to a debt for three years that was not mine
For more than three years, I have been in contact with the Halifax — now part of the Lloyds Group — over a bogus debt claim.
Halifax has acknowledged the £12,000 debt was due to a faulty trace that led to my address appearing against the details of the credit card that has the debt owing.
It promised in December that my address had been removed from the account.
In January, another letter came from debt collectors Blair, Oliver & Scott. Halifax sent me a £50 apology and said it had been in touch with Blair, Oliver & Scott, which was amending its records ‘with immediate effect’.
Now another letter has come from Blair, Oliver & Scott demanding I get in touch in respect of this debt or they will send ‘a collection agent’ to call at my address. Halifax should be holding its head in shame about the shoddy service you have received from its so-called customer relations department.
Not once, but three times it promised to have your address deleted. First, from a rogue account where a loan has been incorrectly attributed to you, and then the credit card debt, which the later correspondence promises to address, but doesn’t.
It is understandable that Halifax would use the services of a debt collector to chase up an outstanding debt of some £12,000. But once it had been firmly established it had nothing to do with you, the dogs should have been called off.
Halifax knows this and it is very disturbing that this promised action wasn’t carried out.
I do not know where the fault lies, but Halifax has to take responsibility for it. A Halifax executive has now spoken to the debt collectors — and that should be the end of the matter. If you are bothered again, get in touch with Money Mail immediately.
Halifax is sending you an extra cheque for £100 in recognition of the distress and inconvenience caused.
