CLAYTON > Man found guilty in slaying • A Ferguson man was found guilty of first-degree murder and five other felonies after a trial this week in St. Louis County Circuit Court. Giordanio A. Blackburn, 26, and two other men were accused of fatally shooting Al-Regis T. Clay, 23, on Jan. 20, 2009, in his apartment in the Spanish Lake area. The men also briefly kidnapped Clay's girlfriend, 23, and her 3-year-old son, but they were found safe several hours later, police said at the time. Blackburn was found guilty by a St. Louis County jury Wednesday night. He faces life in prison without the possibility of parole when he is sentenced Aug. 31. Nigel "Detroit" Austin-Hailey, 37, of Ferguson, pleaded guilty in March to his role in the killing and was sentenced to 23 years in prison. Terrance Washington, 24, of north St. Louis County, pleaded guilty in December and is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 5.
NEW MELLE > Drowning victim is identified • Police on Thursday identified Glenn E. Smith, 50, of Florissant, as the worker who drowned while painting a boat dock Wednesday. Smith fell into a private lake in the 4000 block of Becker Joerling Road about 9:35 a.m. He did not know how to swim and became trapped beneath the dock before anyone could get to him, authorities said.
ST. CHARLES > Gas station is robbed • A gunman robbed the Phillips 66 station at 2300 First Capitol Drive about 10:45 a.m. Thursday. Lt. Mike Akers said the man showed a handgun, ordered a clerk and a customer to get on the floor and took an undisclosed amount of money.
JOPLIN, MO. > Firefighter is accused of theft after tornado • The Jasper County prosecutor has charged a Kansas firefighter with stealing after the May 22 tornado in Joplin. Prosecutor Dean Dankelson on Wednesday filed a misdemeanor charge of stealing against Matthew W. Page, 25. Page was one of three Baxter Springs, Kan., firefighters dismissed in June for alleged misconduct while responding to the tornado. Matt Page is the son of Fire Chief Les Page. Dankelson alleges that Matt Page took items from Joplin's Home Depot. He says there wasn't enough evidence to charge a second suspected firefighter. A third firefighter was dismissed for alleged misuse of his position while helping on his own time.
