Mouse House: D23 Expo Preview – Theme Park Presentations
(9:30am – 10:30am, Stage 28)The only details released related to this event indicate that they will show old footage of the resort featuring Walt Disney, the Mouseketeers and Annette Funicello. I suspect there will be heavy coverage of the expansive recent renovation, which includes new dining establishments, luxury suites and Monorail-themed waterslides.
The Making of The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Undersea Adventure (1pm – 2pm, Stage 28)
Over two decades in various levels of development, the long-awaited attraction set in the world of the 1989 animated classic finally opened this past June at Disney California Adventure Park. The omnimover-style attraction (think of The Haunted Mansion vehicles, but instead of riding on doombuggies, you’re in clamshells) is home to some of the most sophisticated audio-animatronics the company has created, including Ursula. The technology behind Ariel’s hair is also novel. Expect imagineers Lisa Girolami, Larry Nikolai and Chris Crump to share more details related to these topics, among others, in this one-hour presentation. The details are pretty incredible, from the beautiful mural that adorns the loading area of the ride, to the Triton statue located above the entrance (this figure was once located in Disneyland in then-named Ariel’s Grotto, by the way). Perhaps the imagineers may even discuss the version of the attraction scheduled to open in Florida’s Magic Kingdom in the New Fantasyland late next year or early 2013. A panel of yet-to-be-named voice artists will share their experiences providing their vocal talents to Disney attractions. Likely these personalities will only be familiar to the Disney community, but who knows? Maybe Dame Judi Dench, the current narrator of Spaceship Earth at Epcot, will make a cameo appearance. I would prefer previous-narrator Jeremy Irons to stop by, but that’s just me.
(2:45pm – 3:45pm, Stage 28)
California Adventure’s massive redevelopment is taking shape, as the 1920s-era entrance gates have finally been installed and opened. However, that is just the beginning of a striking overhaul of the once beach-style entrance area, which will be transformed to reflect the landscape Walt Disney witnessed when he arrived in the city nine decades ago. This new 1920s plaza will boast a bunch of new dining establishments, shops and even a red trolley line that will stretch toward the Tower of Terror attraction. Count on imagineers and others involved in the planning process to share the plans at this presentation, which will likely reveal even more concept art. Possibly they will even discuss details about the Carthay Circle venue, which will be located in the center of this renovated entrance.

In addition, this project will offer one of the most breathtaking sights found at a Disney park, as the desert/mountain landscape being constructed is nothing short of visually-amazing. Much excitement is in store for Cars Land.

This is the view out my hotel room window this morning – the back of the Paradise Pier section of Disney’s California Adventure. Yep, that’s Mickey’s Fun Wheel and California Screamin’ – rides I’ve seen hundreds of pictures of, but until last night, I had never seen in person.
That’s right, Theme Park Mom is on her first trip to Disneyland!
I arrived late yesterday evening and was treated to seeing and hearing the fireworks from my hotel room across the street from the Disneyland Resort. This morning, I’m headed inside to check out the parks and check into the Disneyland Hotel.
I am so excited to be here. I can’t wait to see Walt’s original theme park, and experience everything at Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure. I’m especially excited to see World of Color and ride The Little Mermaid – Ariel’s Undersea Adventure, which just opened earlier this summer.
