State highways among area's most dangerous roads
The news came in the middle of the night, delivered by a police officer. At first, Rodrigue, who was living in northwest Alabama at the time, thought the officer was talking about her son, since he and her husband have the same name. After a little searching, though, Rodrigue came to the realization that her husband was gone.
Police “told me he was born in 1956, and I realized it wasn't my son,” Rodrigue, 54, said. “I just started screaming.”
Rodrigue's husband, 51-year-old Elgin Lirette, was driving south on La. 1 when his flatbed truck, and the two diesel tanks it carried, was hit by a pickup driven by 21-year-old Jarrod Kiger of Lockport.
The impact also shattered the pickup's gasoline tank, causing the fuel to spill onto the highway and both vehicles to burst into flames.
Lirette and Kiger, severely burned, were killed in the crash, which occurred on Mother's Day. Tests shows Kiger had alcohol and drugs in his system at the time of the crash, police reports say.
La. 1 is one of the area's three most dangerous highways, according to State Police Troop C, averaging seven fatal crashes a year between 2008 and 2010.
The others are La. 308, with an average of eight fatal crashes over the same time period, and La. 24, with an annual average of four.
ALCOHOL AS A FACTORAs in the crash that killed Lirette and Kiger, alcohol is often a factor in those killer wrecks, State Police Master Trooper Bryan Zeringue said.
Each of those years, at least four per year of La. 1's fatal crashes involved drunken drivers, police said. On La. 308, five of the eight involved alcohol, and one of four on La. 24 were blamed on intoxicated drivers.
The most recent fatal crash on La. 24 occurred in April when 23-year-old Jonathan Durocher of Napoleonville allegedly lost control of a stolen car and crashed into a fence, van and the storage facility of a flower shop.
Durocher's death, like the others, Zeringue said, was “preventable.”
“These are people who know they are impaired and are still looking to drive on the highway,” he said.
The day her husband of more than 33 years was killed, Rodrigue said, he was scheduled to head home after making a delivery to Port Fourchon. Instead of the Mother's Day homecoming she had expected, Rodrigue had to come to terms with the news that she would never see him again.
Lirette's body was so badly burned, she said, the coroner wouldn't let her see it. His remains were cremated.
