Custom-Fitted Clubs for the Everyman

It was all about the smash factor. My smash factor wasn’t what it was supposed to be. It was off. It wavered. It was mushy. It wasn’t smashing.

I was getting fitted for new golf clubs, a process that begins with an audition of sorts. You hit your old clubs — in my case, an eight-year-old set of irons — as sophisticated monitors measure everything but your embarrassment.

Because, of course, you’re knocking the ball all over the place. But eventually I settled into my practiced mediocrity, which measured out to a puny smash factor of 1.15.

Ugh.

The smash factor is a ratio of ball speed after contact to club-head speed at contact. So if you have a club-head speed of 77 miles an hour with a 6-iron and a ball speed of 91 m.p.h., then your smash factor is 1.18.

The idea is to get your smash factor above 1.3 with your irons and to about 1.5 with your driver.

I felt like I was in first grade again and the teacher had sent me home with my remarkably unsmashing report card pinned to my jacket. After all these years, there on the computer monitor was my golfing problem: it was a low smash factor.

“Don’t worry, we’ll get that number up,” Chris Marsh, my personal club fitter at the Hot Stix Golf location in Rye Brook, N.Y., said.

Since he was the one with his fingers on the club- and ball-tracking sensors and software, the same technology used to track surface-to-air missiles in military defense systems, I respectfully believed him.

Club fitting has been around for decades, although it was once mostly trial and error, making it so costly it was reserved for elite players. Modern technology has changed that. Along the way, people have come to understand that it is average golfers who could probably benefit the most from clubs matched to their swings, ball flights and body types.

The common lament — “I’m not good enough to get a fitting” — is a myth. A fitting might help the worst among us the most.

The other myth — “I don’t have a repeatable swing” — is also not true.

“The amateur player is no less repeatable than a tour pro,” said Randy Peterson, Callaway Golf’s director of fitting and instruction. “The amateur’s swing isn’t optimal, but it is consistent.”

Being fitted for golf clubs is easier than ever. Many retailers offer fittings for $100 to $150, and they often refund that if you buy a set of woods or irons. Golf Galaxy, one of several chains of sporting goods stores that will help you pick out the right clubs, does more than 60,000 fittings annually. Club manufacturers also have fitting programs: Callaway has 20 fitting centers nationwide and TaylorMade has an equal number spread around the world.

For those just entering the golf world, they will face a lot of difficult to choose and have to try various clubs from different golf brands. So I’d like to analyze three major golf manufacturers with some of their advantages. I wish this would be helpful for those beginners to be acquitant with golf clubs from Titleist, Taylormade and Callaway. These three brands occupied more than 50% of global s sales. We can also see their golf equipments are used by professional golf players. Titleist Golf, Taylormade Golf and are with the highest market exposure and occupation. They mainly take the lead in golf market and clubs development. Now let’s talk about these three major brands.

Firstly, let’s begin with Callaway. Callaway is the first manufacturer to made clubhead with stainless steel. Callaway golf clubs are most used before 2000. But later Taylormade snatch the throne. I have Callaway FT-3, , . I am quite familiar with the development of . They are also with good quality and performance. But they are not as easy to control as Taylormade clubs. You have to swing stable to some extent and then are alble to use Callaway clubs freely. Callaway changed the design style from last year, which makes players to feel the difference design.

Personal speaking, I like the Callaway golf clubs most. I think they are most with collection value. are their classic models. Callaway new released are also spoke highly by great many golfers. Callaway golf clubs are with superior performance and quality. But they are a little hard to control for unstable players.

Secondly, let’s talk about Titleist.Titleist golf clubs are not the first in sales rank, but they are with highest profits, which let Titleist survive in this industry. Titleist aims to middle handicap and low handicap players. I began to use its clubs from 983, and collected 905T, 905r, 970d1, 970d2, 909d3, 909dcom and so on. I love titleist clubs, its drivers are my first choice. Titleist’s clubs are designed in traditional style, with little change for more than 10 years. There are two styles of its irons, blade and cavity back.. Latest AP1 Irons and AP2 Irons are used different material insert. They are as hot as Compared to Taylormade irons and , Titleist irons are most difficult to use, because Titleist irons are objective to low handicap players. They are not intended to use material and new techonologies to make up for playing skills. Their appearance is elegent.
