AMD and Codemasters Talk DiRT 3There were some interesting interview and statistics blog posts at AMD recently in regards to Codemaster’s DiRT 3 and how the two worked together to make the gaming experience better on AMD processors, specifically the 6-core versions.
Codemasters has certainly taken advantage of the desire for intense interaction in motoring games. They have included new features like trailblazer rallies and a new mode called ‘Gymkhana’ , which allows players to perform tricks in a free arena, earning points. Players are also able to upload the highlight videos of their tricks and stunts to YouTube; so far over 100,000 videos have been uploaded showcasing the amazing interest in this activity! Also, for the first time, Codemasters have added split screen, so it’s easy to compete with friends and family together in events like head-to-head and rally cross.
AMD worked very closely with Codemasters to provide players with the ultimate visual experience and to ensure in particular that DiRT3 would be fully optimised for 6-core CPUs, leading to exceptional performance, 3D rendering and overall game-play. Codemasters found that the AMD Phenom II X6 and X4 multi-core processors have the ideal features for optimising performance in DiRT 3. The new title implements Microsoft DirectX 11, which along with AMD Radeon graphics cards creates a stunning gaming experience.
Using 6-core AMD processors, Codemasters anticipate a benchmark increase of 40 – 60% over 4-core AMD processors. What this means for games is an increase in frames per second, thereby enhancing the realism of the gaming experience. The feedback received from Codemasters was that they were very happy with these increases as it allowed them to discern the best balance for multi-core systems and the flexibility to shift or offload workloads to different threads.

What is your focus with DiRT 3 and how has it changed in comparison to the last game?
We have moved away from the festival vibe that we had in DiRT2 as we wanted to create a more professional motorsport vibe for the player in DiRT3. We have kept the race disciplines that worked and refined those that didn’t.
We’ve also introduced Gymkhana which will give players a new discipline to master. The style of the game is cleaner and more stylized and the player no longer lives in their battered old RV. DiRT3 will encourage players to focus more on their racing and events rather than hanging out in the menus.
