Annual Luncheon to Honor and Welcome New Teachers Scheduled for July 29

The Brown Bag Luncheon, an annual event hosted by Northwest Georgia Credit Union for new educators and their administration, will be held on Friday, July 29, 2011.

This is the sixth year that Northwest Georgia Credit Union has hosted the luncheon, which is designed to honor, celebrate and inspire teachers who are new to Floyd County Schools, Rome City Schools, Darlington School, Unity Christian School, Saint Mary’s Catholic School, Berry Elementary School and Berry Middle School.

Chief Academic Officer for the Georgia Department of Education, Dr. Michael Buck, will be the event’s keynote speaker. The upcoming event has already drawn community-wide support from many local organizations such as Redmond Regional Medical Hospital, Ford, Gittings, and Kane Jewelers, Berry College, Shorter University, Christie’s Office Supply, Mellow Mushroom, Starbucks, Barnes and Noble, Tennessee Aquarium and others. The Brown Bag Luncheon will be held at the Forum in the Riverwalk Ballroom at 11:30 a.m.

Needy students to benefit from ECC Project Backpack — Elgin news ...

Project Backpack, a community-based initiative led by Elgin Community College to benefit students in need, is accepting donations of school supplies now through Monday, Aug. 1 at several area locations. This is the initiative’s second year; more than 1,300 students were helped in 2010.

Supplies will be distributed Saturday, Aug. 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at ECC’s Spartan Events Center, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin, to students who provide proof of residency or school enrollment in District 300, District U-46 or ECC for fall 2011; limit one backpack per student.

Donations of the following school supplies are sought. • Gender-neutral backpacks

In addition to ECC, donations are being collected at the Community Crisis Center in Elgin, the United Way of Elgin and South Elgin, all District 300 schools, the Elgin Township Office, Delnor Hospital, School District U-46 Educational Services Center, the Kane County Teachers Credit Union, the Gail Borden Public Library, and Elgin City Hall.
